APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN

Siyakhula Scholarship – 2021 Scholarship

Closing Date: 22 February 2021

Background:

In 2018 the Michaelis School of Fine Art organised the Siyakhula fundraising art auction with the aim of establishing a scholarship fund to support promising UCT postgraduate Fine Art students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds who are in financial need.

The auction was supported by a large number of artists, and by galleries, donors and buyers. With the proceeds of the auction the Siyakhula Scholarship fund has been established to provide a select amount of comprehensive Honours and Master’s scholarships, and, in exceptional circumstances, undergraduate scholarships, for students studying or who have been accepted to study at the Michaelis School of Fine Art.

Eligibility:

Siyakhula scholarships were set up to support black South African students, given the historical disadvantages and the continued socio-economic impact that this has had in terms of access, particularly to tertiary education. Applicants from bordering regions on the continent will however be considered, on a case by case basis, depending on the availability of funds.

All Fine Art students who are either already registered at the Michaelis School of Art or have been accepted to study at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2021, and who are from historically disadvantaged backgrounds and are in financial need are eligible to apply for the Siyakhula Scholarship. The scholarships are aimed at postgraduate students at Honours and Master’s level.

Only in exceptional cases, will Fine Art undergraduate students in their 3rd year of study

be considered by the selection committee for their 4th year of study. Such applications would need to be strongly supported by a staff member for consideration.

Please note that the call for applications is made towards the end of the year, once a year only.
